The idea inside The Moment Before

What happens before the move?

Calm is not the goal here. The book asks what attention is for when a partner changes pace, anger rises, or you want to be right. Its Four Rooms—Sit, Move, Meet, Return—take that question into class and daily life.

  • Catch the story before the move.

Ask whether you are answering this moment or a fear you brought into the room.

  • Tell a cue from a guess.

Look at one thing you saw, what you expected, and what your partner actually did.

  • Meet anger with a choice.

Explore why a strong feeling can matter without letting its first urge make the decision.

  • Know when to act and when to stop.

A clear task and an agreed stop rule matter more than trying to feel calm.

  • Use the Four Rooms.

Sit, Move, Meet, and Return help you look before, during, and after familiar practice.

  • Take the question beyond class.

The 15-chapter READ book and illustrated TRAIN guide include partner plans, note pages, and an optional 21-day path.

Your first useful action

Name the task before you begin.

Before you start, say what you plan to do, what you will watch for, and when you will stop. Write those three things down. That is a first field note.

Use familiar tasks and qualified instruction for contact work. Stop when a task feels unsafe.
The journey

The choice arrives before the story about it.

Notice how you feel when you arrive. Watch one thing in a task you know. Agree on the task with your partner. Afterward, write what happened. One round does not define you.

  2. MoveNotice one cue.
  3. MeetAgree on the task.

Where does a choice become hard to see?

Choose the situation closest to your practice:

This helps you pick a page and a small exercise. It cannot tell you what is safe for you.

The problem and the mechanism

Calm is not the measure of care.

Under pressure, a first urge can feel like an order. The books help you notice it, choose what to do, and check how your choice affects your partner. You do not have to feel calm to do this.

The core stands on its own.

Your $29 gets both books: READ and the picture-filled TRAIN guide. The 20 Moment Cards cost $12 more if you want them. You can use the books without the cards.

The framework inside

Four rooms, four moments.

01Sit
02Move
03Meet
04Return

First, name how you arrive. Next, watch one thing in a move you know. Agree on the task with your partner. Afterward, write what happened without judging your whole self.

Try a small practice: one cue, one correction
  1. Choose a familiar solo movement and name its ordinary purpose.
  2. Notice one cue while moving, such as the placement of your foot or the start of an unnecessary rush.
  3. Pause, make one bounded correction, and repeat at an easy pace.
  4. Record what you observed and what remains uncertain.

This is a learning exercise, not a treatment, safety guarantee or performance test. Do not practise unfamiliar contact from a page.

A way to begin

Three weeks of small, optional observations.

In week one, notice one urge during a task you know. In week two, agree on the task with your partner. In week three, listen to their answer and keep one useful lesson. Take breaks. Skip days. This path does not promise a new habit or better fighting.

The illustrated guide shows the room around the choice.

The TRAIN sample above is a real page from The Four Rooms of Attention. It has pictures, small tasks, space for notes, partner plans, and clear ways to stop. It helps you use ideas from the READ book.

A cue to read while stopped.

Moment Card 11, “Before first contact,” asks: “Do we share the same task?” Its action is to agree on purpose, range, roles, stop and change. This is one example of the 20-card deck; it is separate from the complete two-book core. Pause before reading any card during training.

Made for the reflective martial artist.

For students and coaches who want to examine impulse, restraint, agreement and responsibility within their existing practice.

What this book does not claim.

This is not a course in a meditation tradition. It does not treat a health problem, replace care or coaching, or promise safer or better fighting. You do not have to sit still. You can keep your eyes open or move.

Digital, readable, and made to use.

You can read the picture-filled book as a PDF, web page, or plain text. You can copy text from the PDF and fill in the guide's notes. The guide shows other ways to try a task and when to stop.

Sources and provenance

What these four rooms mean.

Spiral Combat made the four rooms to help you ask better questions. They do not speak for a Buddhist, Daoist, or Zen school. They have not been tested as health care. The books explain their sources. Their scenes are made-up examples, not buyer reviews or measured results.

Two books. One useful question to carry into class.

Read the book, try one small task, and look back at one choice. Both books cost $29. You do not need the cards.

Questions before you choose.

Is this a meditation lineage or treatment?

No. Sit, Move, Meet and Return are an editorial framework with eyes-open and movement alternatives. The books do not teach a lineage or replace mental-health care.

Do I need to sit still or buy the cards?

No. Sitting is optional, and the two core books are complete without the separate card deck.

Can this make sparring safer or improve performance?

No such outcome is promised. Use qualified instruction for contact and stop an unsuitable task.

How will I receive the books?
